While the short-handed Siena Men's Tennis team was without its' usual No. 1 singles player
Fabio Varella, the Saints received a boost from a pair of its freshmen during Saturday's matches despite a 5-2 defeat at Binghamton inside of the Lane-Starke Tennis Center in Vestal, NY.
Oscar Martinez, the La Guaira, Venezuela native, upped his overall record to 7-4 by dominating William Morias Binnie 6-0, 6-1 at the singles No. 2 position. For Martinez, it marked his first victory from the No. 2 spot.
And, at the singles No. 5 slot, Waterford, Ireland native
Dylan Breen moved to 4-1 in overall singles play by rallying back for a 6-7 (3), 6-2, 10-7 tie-break win against Andre Ajed.
The other matches tilted toward the Bearcats who were able to win the remaining matches in straight sets.
"This one's a tough loss today," said Siena men's tennis head coach
John Chiaramonte. "We have a few injuries in our lineup, but that is not to discredit Binghamton. They are a strong team this year. Credit to
Dylan Breen for stepping in and getting a solid win at five singles."
The Bearcats improved to 2-2 on the season and have won consecutive dual matches after last weekend's conference-opening win in the NEC against Le Moyne.
Next up, the Saints (1-3) will have a quick turnaround and play Bucknell (1-1) on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. The Bison dropped their match on Saturday to NJIT in Binghamton 5-2.
