Late Goals Sink Men’s Lax in OT

Saints allow tying goal with two seconds left

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Holding an 11-6 lead with 10:44 to play, Siena Men's Lacrosse allowed a late rally including a tying goal with two seconds remaining in regulation to occur followed by an overtime winner by Owen Stefanko to lift LIU past Siena 12-11 in overtime of a conference game on a snowy Hickey Field Saturday afternoon.

Siena (3-5, 1-2 MAAC) had built up a comfortable lead early spearheaded by four consecutive goals by sophomore Caden Olmstead within a four-minute span and a hat trick by junior Pratt Reynolds in quick striking succession.

Reynolds reached the 100-career point mark on this his third goal with 1:09 left in the first half as the Saints went into the locker room ahead 7-2 at the break.

Reynolds became the 31st member in program history to score at least 100 points in his Saints' career.

After a swift run and score by long stickman R.J. Ihlefeld gave Siena an 11-6 advantage, it started to unravel for Siena as goals by Zander Hauck, Mark Regan, Tom von Bargen and Tyler Davide gave the Sharks (6-1, 3-0 MAAC) and opportunity to steal it.

It appeared that Siena might be able to run out the clock after holding a one-goal as it called timeout with 35 seconds left. But a costly turnover with 18 seconds left provided one last shot for LIU, who was able to score with two seconds left on a goal by Sean Boll.

It ended 29 seconds into overtime on a sudden victory goal by Stefanko.

Despite a strong showing from Saints' graduate student Dylan Pape on the X (won 15 of 27 face offs), the Saints turned the ball over 26 times including 10 times in the fourth quarter alone.

LIU held a 39-33 advantage in shots while Siena held a slight edge at 21-20 in shots on goal.

Siena returns to action on Wednesday, March 27 when they host Canisius (2-7, 0-3 MAAC) in league action.

The Golden Griffins have dropped five straight including a 12-5 loss versus Manhattan on Saturday.

Face off is set for 12 p.m. at Hickey Field.

The game will be featured on ESPN+.
