A furious comeback attempt by the Siena Men's Lacrosse team came up being a case of just too little, too late in an exciting back-and-forth game that lived up to its billing between MAAC rivals on the nationally-televised stage of ESPNU Wednesday night.
Siena outscored Marist 7-2 over the final 18 plus minutes of play, but wound up falling 14-13 to the home standing Red Foxes at Tenney Stadium in Poughkeepsie.
Siena (5-7 overall, 3-4 MAAC) trailed 6-4 at the break and had several shot attempts clang off the post in an otherwise evenly played opening half.
Marist (6-6, 3-4 MAAC) got the separation it needed through the early parts of the third quarter, scoring six of the game's seven goals highlighted by two of Peter Murray's four goals and one of Joshua Balcarcel's four scores.
With Siena trailing 12-6 with 5:15 remaining in the third quarter, the Saints whittled the lead down to one on two goals apiece from
Travis Fry and
Pratt Reynolds and one each from
Jack Cavaioli and
Caden Olmstead.
Fry scored with 18 seconds left to give the Saints one last opportunity to tie, but the ball spilled out off of the face off as each team tried to maintain possession before Marist's Aidan McCaffery scooped it and ran out the last ticks.
Marist held a 55-51 shots advantage, but the Saints had a 28-23 edge as it related to shots on goal.
Noble Smith made 15 saves to lead the Red Foxes while
Andrew Arcuri made nine saves.
Siena returns to action this Saturday in a conference game hosting Manhattan (5-7, 5-2 MAAC) at 3 p.m. from Hickey Field.
The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
