Water Polo Battles at Home to Conclude 2024 Regular Season

Saints Dropped Close Matches to Marist & Iona on Senior Day

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Water Polo capped its 23rd season in program history with a pair of close MAAC water polo battles at the Saints Swim Center on Saturday. The Saints (8-18, 1-10) took a 14-10 loss against Marist before dropping a 9-8 decision to Iona. The team honored graduating seniors Caroline Behr and Sydney Arnold in a Senior Day ceremony prior to the start of the second match.

RV Marist 14, Siena 10

Facing both in-state rivals for the second time this season in their only home action of the year, the Green and Gold kept it close throughout the first half thanks to an early hat trick from freshman Catherine Williamson. The Saints netted three straight goals after Marist scored three of the first four to briefly hold a 4-3 lead in the second quarter, but the visitors scored four of the final five goals of the first half to hold a 7-5 lead at the intermission.

Siena quickly tied it back up to begin the second half with swift goals from Williamson and sophomore Parker Thomas, but Marist again rattled off three of the next four goals. Freshman Quincy Frommelt netted a pair of third quarter scores and classmate Lucia Fernandez Caballero added a late one in the period to put the home team within one twice, but the Red Foxes closed things out with the final three goals of the game.

Four goals from Williamson and two from Frommelt led six different Siena scorers, while Behr made six saves and freshman Maggie Frye recorded five while splitting time in-goal.

Iona 9, Siena 8

The Saints again played in a competitive contest which included holding a 3-2 lead after the opening quarter via goals from sophomore Audrey Lacey, freshman Rebecca Currie, and Frommelt. Both teams continued to go back and forth in the second quarter, with Iona scoring with nine seconds remaining in the first half to force a 5-5 tie at intermission.

The Gaels then took control of the game in the third quarter with three of four goals, but the Saints kept it close with two goals in the fourth quarter. Frommelt found the back of the net with 5:17 remaining and Williamson scored with 41 seconds remaining, but the team could not get closer. Williamson again recorded a hat trick, while Frommelt scored twice and Behr made ten saves in-goal.

Siena concluded the 2024 season under the direction of head coach Alex Williams for the fourth year, and with the program's most wins in a single season since 2019.
