An initial slow start for Siena Women's Lacrosse gave way to an eruption of goals as the Saints outscored home-standing Quinnipiac 6-1 in a tide-turning second quarter and Siena held off the Bobcats 15-12 on Wednesday at QU Lacrosse Stadium in Hamden, CT for its fifth consecutive win and 10
th in last 11 games.
Siena (12-4 overall, 7-1 MAAC) maintained its positioning for top seed contention in the MAAC Women's Lacrosse Tournament.
In doing so, the Saints also tied the program record for most wins in a season.
It previously had won 12 games in a season in 2023 as well as in 2019.
The Saints will now conclude its regular season by hosting #23 Fairfield (14-1, 8-0 MAAC) this Saturday at 1 p.m. at Hickey Field with the winner earning the top overall seed for the MAAC Women's Lacrosse Tournament and home field advantage for both the Semifinals and potential Championship.
The top two seeds will earn an automatic bye into the MAAC Semifinal round.
Lauren Kenny scored twice to help give Quinnipiac a 4-2 advantage at the end of the first quarter, but the Saints scored eight of the game's next nine goals to open up a five-goal lead.
Senior
Rebecca Gilhooley got into a scoring groove, securing a hat trick in the quarter alone and finished with a game-high five goals.
Gilhooley's score with 9:54 left pulled the Saints even at 4-4 and her next goal at the 6:34 mark helped set a new record for her teammate
Grace Dobrzynski, who set the MAAC single-season record for most assists by any individual player with 52.
The score also put Siena in front for the first time on the day with a 5-4 lead.
While EllaGrace Delmond was able to tie it 5-5 with 2:20 left in the half for the Bobcats, Siena responded with three goals in the final minute and 17 seconds to carry an 8-5 advantage into the locker room as Gilhooley,
Kelly Logue and Dobrzynski all scored including one at the buzzer as time expired by Dobrzynski.
The Saints had two other players reach milestones in the second half as
Jordan Bentley recorded her 100
th career point and
Taryn Asselin reached 100 draw controls this season.
Draw controls were an important factor once again for Siena, who led in that category 19-10 for the game.
Asselin recorded nine draw controls,
Mikayla Cooke was a major contributor as well with seven draw controls while
Sydney Hannes added three.
Defensively, the Saints were led by
Jenna Colabufo, who had a pair of caused turnovers and ground balls.
Graduate student goalkeeper
Sabrina Krasner made eight saves.
