Niagara Edges Saints in Weekend Opener

Siena Strands 12 in 5-4 Setback

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Baseball tallied 13 hits, but all of them were singles, and stranded 12 runners in a frustrating 5-4 series-opening setback vs. MAAC leader Niagara at Connors Park.

The conference's leading hitter Eric Rataczak was on base all five times – going a perfect 4-for-4 – and drove in the decisive go-ahead run for Niagara (23-10, 10-0), which continued to build upon the best conference start in program history.

Seven different players registered hits – including five with multi-hit performances – for Siena (6-27, 3-7) which dropped to 1-6 in one-run games. Kobe Stenson led the way with three hits, while Danny Barbero added a pair of singles and scored twice.

The Saints jumped out to an early lead on back-to-back two-out RBI singles from Gavin Thorburn and Nick Bergamotto in the first. The Purple Eagles responded with three runs in the third to take their first lead.

Siena got another clutch two-out RBI single to knot the score at 3-3 in the fifth, courtesy of Louis Percival.

But Niagara rallied again with a pair to reclaim the lead for good in the sixth on the go-ahead single from Rataczak and a sacrifice fly from Gavin Schrader.

The Saints got one back in the seventh when the Purple Eagles committed two errors on the same play – and put a pair of runners on in the bottom of the ninth – but couldn't complete the comeback. Niagara has now won seven of the past nine in the series, albeit seven of the nine total contests have been decided by two runs or less or in extra innings.

Noah Rodriguez gave Siena a chance down the stretch with three scoreless innings, scattering just two hits while striking out three, as the Saints staff limited the damage overall against one of the nation's top offenses which entered the day ranked 21st in the country in both batting average and runs scored.

Nick Monile scored twice and doubled for the only extra-base hit of the afternoon for either team amongst 21 combined hits to help lead the Purple Eagles to their 13th straight MAAC Regular Season victory dating back to last season.

Siena will look to even the series Saturday at 1 p.m.
