Alistair Morin pitched a career-high seven and two thirds quality innings,
Austin Rachiele provided the lumber with a home run for his 200
th collegiate hit and
Kobe Stenson laced three hits and drove in three runs as the Siena Baseball led wire-to-wire in a 12-2 thumping of host Iona at City Park in New Rochelle, NY on a seasonal Thursday night.
It had a hint of vindication for Morin, who had been in a similar scenario earlier this season on March 8 against Stony Brook where he had departed a game with a quality start under his belt.
But the Saints fell 3-2 that day in a hard-luck defeat.
The bats had more than enough to carry Morin (1-7) this time as eight different Saints hit safety and Siena scored in every inning but the third and seventh innings to rack up a comfortable, breezy victory.
Morin provided his second quality start this season, scattering eight hits while striking out six on 117 pitches. The ball was then handed over to
Noah Wieczorek, who finished it out by going one and a third scoreless innings with just one walk conceded.
The Saints (11-39, 7-15 MAAC) took the lead right from the start as Stenson knocked in two on a single to center field in the top of the first inning.
After the Gaels (11-37, 5-17 MAAC) cut the lead to 2-1 on an RBI double by James Kemp, it was all Saints from there.
Siena tacked on another run in the second on an RBI fly out by
Tyler Figueroa, then two more came across in the fourth when
Gavin Thorburn walked and the ball got away from Iona catcher Garret Gray for a passed ball that scored
Louis Percival.
Nick Bergamotto followed with an RBI single to increase the lead to 5-1.
Then, Rachiele hit a blast to right-center for his ninth home run this season and his 200
th career collegiate hit that spans his time with MLCA and Siena.
Gunnar Meland knocked home a pair of runs on RBI hits in both the sixth and eighth to make it 10-2.
Danny Barbero doubled to left-center for a ground-rule double that scored Bergamotto and Stenson added one more on sac fly RBI that plated Figueroa.
The Saints fielders also played clean baseball, free of an error, for the 10
th time this season.
The series will continue with the middle game of the set on Friday with a first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. against the Gaels.
