The bottom half of the Siena Baseball team's lineup got it done with the number five through nine hitters batting 12 for 22 with four doubles, a triple and all nine runs driven in for the team as the Saints finished its 2024 campaign on a high note by taking two of three games in the regular season finale in a 9-5 win in New Rochelle at City Park on Saturday afternoon.
After trailing 4-3, Siena re-took the lead in the top of the sixth inning when
Austin Rachiele led off with a double and later scored on an RBI triple to left by
Noah Brooks.
The next batter,
Willie Schwarick, drove the ball deep enough to center field to score Brooks on a tag up from third base.
It gave the Saints a 5-4 lead that they would not relinquish.
The Saints added to their lead with a four-run load of insurance runs in the seventh inning—all with two outs when
Kobe Stenson drove in two on a single and was followed by a Brooks RBI single and a Schwarick RBI double to make it 9-4 Siena.
The Saints (12-40, 8-16 MAAC) were the ones to strike first for a third consecutive time against the Gaels.
Rachiele singled, then stole both second and third base before Stenson knocked a ball through the left side for the game's first run.
Later in the inning,
Gavin Thorburn roped a double to left-center field to score Brooks and Stenson to make it 3-0 Siena.
Iona had a quick answer though. In the bottom of the second inning, the Gaels came through with some clutch hitting.
All with two outs, Iona's Josiah Ragsdale singled home Anthony Zollo and Garret Gray to cut it to 3-2.
Then, Carter Groen tripled to right center to score both Ragsdale and Gonzalez to take a 4-3 lead.
The Gaels (12-38, 6-18 MAAC) would get a solo home run from left fielder Nick Forney in the eighth inning, but that rally attempt was halted as the Siena bullpen combined to pitch four and a third innings and allowed just the one run on two hits from the arms of
Tyler Tilton (1-1),
Billy Rozakis and Sebastian Benz to seal it.
