Softball Clinches Postseason Berth with Sweep of Manhattan

Saints Headed to MAAC Tournament for Seventh Straight Season Following Wins

RIVERDALE, NY – Call it heating up at the right time. Siena Softball has won seven-in-a-row, and clinched its seventh straight MAAC postseason berth following a doubleheader sweep at Manhattan on Friday afternoon. The Saints (29-19, 12-10) took 9-2 and 5-3 victories over the Jaspers (12-37, 9-14) at Gaelic Park to begin the final weekend series of the regular season.

Siena 9, Manhattan 2

Coming in riding a five-game winning streak to a series that was pushed up due to weather and needing at least one win to clinch a postseason berth, the Green and Gold used a late offensive outburst to begin the series on a high note. Following four scoreless innings to start, the home team got on the board with an RBI single to right center.

The final two innings blew things open in favor of the visitors. A crooked sixth inning came in the form of a two RBI double to left field from freshman Chloe Cummings. The Saints then exploded for seven runs in the top of the seventh inning to put the game on ice, beginning with an RBI single from junior Madi Silber. Back-to-back home runs from senior Isabella Pardo and junior McKenzie Swinson made it 6-1 in favor of Siena, while Cummings delivered again with a 2 RBI double and sophomore Emma Petersen followed with a two-run two-bagger.

Siena held a definitive 13-6 hits advantage, with Cummings going 4-5 with three RBI's, while Pardo and fifth year Jocelyn Ulrich also had multi-hit performances. Redshirt-sophomore Alissa Eimont (16-8) struck out five with just four hits allowed in six innings, while freshman Hailey Francois fanned one in the final inning.

Siena 5, Manhattan 3

The Saints picked right back up en-route to their seventh straight win over Manhattan in game two, beginning with Pardo scoring on an error in the first inning. Manhattan countered with an RBI groundout in the home half of the inning, but another blunder gave the Saints the lead back for good, with Silber scoring on an error in the second.

Siena then used back-to-back RBI doubles from Petersen and Silber in the fifth to take a four-run lead and build up enough insurance to withstand a 2 RBI double from Manhattan in the fifth that made it a two-run game. The Saints then retired five of the final six batters and stranded the other to seal the deal.

Both teams recorded six hits, with Silber going 3-4 with a pair of runs batted in. Graduate student Nicole Patille (9-4) recorded a stellar eight strikeouts as part of a complete game victory inside the circle.

Siena will look to end the 2024 regular season on a high note with one final game against Manhattan on Saturday, May 4 at 3:30 PM.
