LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Women's Soccer is off to its first 2-0 start in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action in four seasons following a second straight Saturday afternoon scoring surge on Hickey Field. Five different players scored as the Saints dispatched Mount St. Mary's 5-1.
Siena (4-4, 2-0) has erupted for 11 goals over its first two conference contests, which includes a 6-0 domination of Iona in the league-opener last Saturday in Loudonville. The scoring deluge marks the most goals scored in consecutive matches for the Saints in 17 years, since exploding for 12 in back-to-back victories over Manhattan (3-1) and Saint Peter's (9-0) from Oct. 19-21, 2007.
The reigning MAAC Player of the Week
Megan Stowell broke the stalemate early, heading home the rebound from a blast off the crossbar from two-time defending MAAC Rookie of the Week
Catherine Rogers in the sixth minute.
Siena put the match to bed early in the second half with a pair of insurance scores within the first four minutes of the stanza. Freshman
Anna Swyers blasted home her first collegiate tally just 47 seconds in, while Rogers added her sixth spanning her first eight collegiate matches shortly thereafter.
The Saints added a pair more down the stretch to the fuel their second straight rout.
Micaiah Croce netted her second goal in as many matches in the 65
th minute of a beautiful give-and-go with Rogers, the latter of whom then found classmate
Briana Neary in the 72
nd minute for her first collegiate score.
The final helper capped the second five-point performance already this season for Rogers, who finished just one assist off the program single-match record of four set by Michele Tremblay on Sept. 19, 2015 vs. Saint Peter's.
Mount St. Mary's (3-4, 0-2) spoiled the shutout in the 79
th minute when they were awarded a penalty kick which Anika Sproxton finished for the lone blemish on yet another superlative afternoon.
Siena once more peppered the opposing goal with their second straight 22-shot performance. The Saints held yet another decided advantage in both shots (22-10) and corners (7-3) to top off the program's first 2-0 MAAC start since the 2020-21 Spring COVID MAAC Championship season, and first during a traditional fall campaign since 2016.
Freshman
Cate Burns made two saves to earn another win in goal while watching a trio of her classmates score for youthful Siena, which has already matched last season's overall win total.
The Saints will look to build upon their momentum as they head into a huge two-match road week. A crosstown showdown at UAlbany starts things off Wednesday night at 7 p.m., before the week concludes with a trip to two-time defending MAAC Tournament Champion Quinnipiac on Saturday.
