Total Domination

Saints Slam Iona, Again, For Big Bounce Back to Open MAAC Play

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Following its most lopsided loss of the season just three days prior, Siena Women's Soccer responded in a major way with its largest margin of victory in four seasons. Megan Stowell and Catherine Rogers each posted multi-goal performances as the Saints made a statement with a 6-0 domination of Iona in the MAAC opener at Hickey Field.

The reigning MAAC Rookie of the Year and the early frontrunner for the award this season set the tone with three goals spanning just 13:15 bridging both halves. Stowell opened the scoring in the 36th minute, before Rogers added the first of her two consecutive tallies with a back-breaking finish just 18 seconds before the half. The defending MAAC Rookie of the Week then completed her second multi-goal performance of the young season less than four minutes into the second half, finishing a feed from Stowell, and the rout was on.

But Siena (3-4, 1-0) was far from finished. The Saints continued to pour it on from there – literally – as the heavens opened on Hickey Field. Stowell capped a match-high five-point performance with her second goal of the afternoon in the 65th minute, while Sarah Harnett (77') and Micaiah Croce (86') added their first tallies of the season for good measure.

The decisive triumph marked a complete 180 for Siena which had suffered a 5-0 setback at the hands of Vermont on the same field less than 72 hours earlier. The Saints responded with their highest scoring output since an identical 6-0 shellacking – also over Iona (1-4-2, 0-1) on Hickey Field – to open the program's 2020-21 Spring COVID MAAC Championship season on Mar. 25, 2021.

Siena has now won 14 in a row over the Gaels dating back to 2013, while posting a 39-8 scoring margin. The Saints also ran their unbeaten streak to 15 straight (13-0-2) over Iona in Loudonville dating back to the start of the millennium, while outscoring the Gaels 43-8 during that time.

Siena dominated from start to finish, registering a 22-5 advantage in shots and a 6-1 margin in corners. Cate Burns was called upon to make two saves for the Saints, as the freshman recorded her second clean sheet.

Kayla Kalbaugh and Savannah Rogers split time in goal making five and four saves, respectively, for Iona which is winless in its last 19 road matches (0-16-3) dating back to 2022.

Siena will look to build upon its impressive conference-opening victory when the Saints close out their season-long four-match homestand vs. MAAC foe Mount St. Mary's next Saturday at 1 p.m. on Hickey Field.
