Canisius (10-11, 8-3 MAAC) edged Siena (10-15, 5-6 MAAC) in a five-set thriller on Saturday at Koessler Athletic Center, claiming the match 25-13, 23-25, 25-23, 28-30, 18-16. This marks the third consecutive match in which Canisius and Siena have gone to a fifth set, with the Golden Griffins winning all three by two points.
Mary Claire Deacy led the team with a career-high 15 kills on 34 attempts, finishing with a .382 hitting percentage.
Doga Diraz totaled eight total blocks and
Alara Doganyuz facilitated the offense with 22 assists while also serving two aces.
The match began with Canisius taking control early, opening with a 6-0 run facilitated by strong play from Emma Isroff and Julia Lenik. The Saints responded briefly with a service ace by
Natalia Clifford, who achieved a career-high with nine kills in the match, and a block by
Berra Tok and
Doga Diraz, narrowing the gap to 6-3. However, Canisius maintained their momentum with Bella Mosquera contributing two kills, extending their lead to 11-3. Despite a service error and a few points from the Saints, Canisius pushed forward with consistent assists from Ella Bourque, leading to the final point delivered by Madison Cowan. Canisius secured the set 25-13.
Siena claimed the second set with a 25-23 victory over Canisius, overcoming an earlier deficit. Canisius initially led 6-1, capitalizing on multiple attack errors by the Saints. However, Siena fought back, tying the score at 9-9 following a block by
Berra Tok and
Doga Diraz. The set remained tightly contested, with the Saints finally taking the lead at 24-23 after consecutive blocks against Emma Isroff.
Gabrielle Wire and
Ella Treasure secured the set win with another block against Isroff.
In a closely contested third set, Canisius edged Siena 25-23 to take the lead in the match. The set was marked by back-and-forth scoring, with Siena initially taking a lead following an ace by
Elizabeth Phillips. Canisius responded with an effective offensive push, highlighted by Madison Cowan's kills. Deacy and
Gabrielle Wire managed to keep the visitors in contention with well-timed kills. However, Canisius maintained its edge, with Emma Isroff sealing the set with a kill, assisted by Ella Bourque, to secure a narrow victory.
In the fourth set, Treasure and
Alandra Hasbrouck connected for a pair of key kills, contributing to Siena's initial lead. Canisius' Emma Isroff and Julia Lenik responded with effective attacks, keeping the score close throughout. Isroff's kill brought Canisius to set point at 24-23, but Siena's
Berra Tok leveled the score. Siena sealed the set with a final push, as
Natalia Clifford's kill and a decisive finish by
Doga Diraz closed out the set, securing the victory for the Saints.
In a tightly contested fifth set, Canisius edged Siena 18-16 to secure the victory. Siena started strong with Deacy delivering key kills to keep her team in the match, including one from Hasbrouck that tied the score at 7-7. Canisius then regained momentum with Isroff and Cowan contributing crucial points, including a pivotal kill by Isroff.
