LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. — Siena (11-15, 6-6 MAAC) rallied to defeat Marist (7-17, 5-7 MAAC) in four sets, 22-25, 25-17, 25-17, 34-32, on Tuesday evening at the UHY Center.
The Saints' attack was bolstered by a .276 hitting percentage, overcoming a first-set loss to claim the match.
With this victory, Siena moved one game in front of both Marist and Sacred Heart in the MAAC standings for the potential sixth-and final-playoff spot.
Siena holds an 11-15 overall record and is 6-6 in MAAC play. The Red Foxes stand at 7-17 overall with a 5-7 record in the MAAC.
Mary Claire Deacy led the team with 15 kills and registered 16 total points, showcasing her offensive efficiency.
Deacy has recorded a season-high 15 kills in back-to-back matches and had double-digit kills in six of the previous nine matches.
Ella Treasure contributed with eight kills and five block assists, highlighting her dual impact on both offense and defense.
Berra Tok also made a significant defensive contribution with five block assists.
Autumn Willmott excelled at the service line, delivering five aces to boost the team's serving game.
The first set saw a competitive back-and-forth, with notable contributions from
Doga Diraz, who recorded multiple kills, and Treasure, who added key points with kills of her own.
Elizabeth Phillips delivered an ace that briefly shifted momentum in Siena's favor. Despite these efforts, the Red Foxes maintained pressure, and Ava Lanzetta's late kills contributed to their lead.
The set concluded with Marist narrowly ahead, 25-22.
The Saints seized momentum in the second set with a decisive run, highlighted by Willmott's back-to-back aces that leveled the score at 7-7.
This sparked a series of errors from Marist, allowing Siena to surge ahead. Treasure and Phillips contributed key blocks that further extended Siena's advantage.
Marist attempted to respond with kills from Sara Dasic, but the Saints' front line maintained pressure, with Deacy and
Gabrielle Wire adding crucial points.
Diraz closed the set with a kill, securing a 25-17 victory for Siena in the second set.
Siena opened the third set with a decisive run, taking a 5-1 lead, highlighted by Phillips' kill, assisted by
Alandra Hasbrouck, and an ace from Treasure.
Hasbrouck has recorded back-to-back matches with a double-double in assists and digs. Deacy contributed significantly with multiple kills, bringing Siena to a commanding 13-7 advantage.
Despite a brief rally from the Red Foxes, which reduced the gap to 18-16, Siena responded with a strong finishing sequence.
Willmott's consecutive service aces extended the lead, and Phillips and Deacy sealed the set with crucial kills.
Siena closed the set with a 25-17 victory.
In the fourth set, Siena and Marist exchanged leads in a tense back-and-forth battle.
The Saints gained momentum with a pivotal ace from
Alara Doganyuz, tying the score at 22. Phillips delivered crucial kills, including one that tied the game at 28. Despite the Red Foxes' efforts to reclaim the lead, the Saints capitalized on attack errors by Marist players, finally securing the set with a kill by Diraz assisted by
Amelia Robertson.
The set concluded with Siena edging out Marist 34-32.
The game ended with Siena clinching the victory with a final score of 34-32 in the last set.
Next up, the Saints will continue their home stand and host Fairfield (17-5 overall, 11-1 MAAC) on Friday at 6 p.m. It will also be Senior Night for Siena.
