Siena Women's Soccer is headed back to the postseason. Needing to win their final four matches – and also get some help – the Saints accomplished their mission in a resounding way. Siena posted its most lopsided victory of the season, defeating Iona for the 15
th straight time with a decisive 4-0 triumph in the regular season finale in New Rochelle to punch their ticket to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament.
Winners of four straight by a combined 13-0 margin – and unbeaten in their last five – red-hot Siena (9-4-6, 6-3-3) has secured the No. 5 seed and will battle Sacred Heart in the MAAC Quarterfinals Sunday in Connecticut. The teams finished tied for fourth in the MAAC Standings, but the Pioneers earned the higher seed and right to host by virtue of their head-to-head 1-0 win over the Saints on Sept. 6 in Loudonville.
After posting three straight 3-0 wins to put themselves in postseason position, Siena did one better on Wednesday, with four different scorers accounting for a season-high four goals.
Briana Neary led the way with four points on a goal and two assists, while
Abby Daly added a three-point afternoon with a goal and an assist.
The Saints set the tone early, erupting for three goals in a 15-minute span midway through the first half. Senior
Micaiah Croce scored what proved to be her second collegiate match-winning goal in as many contests in the 19
th minute while Neary and Daly, who teamed up to assist on the decisive tally, added insurance goals of their own in the 25
th and 34
th minutes, respectively.
Catherine Rogers capped the onslaught with her team-leading seventh goal early in the second half for Siena, which has now outscored Iona (6-10-3, 4-6-2) by a whopping 43-8 margin during their winning streak in the series which dates back to 2013.
Cate Flanagan added a pair of helpers to become the program's single-season assist queen which now stands at 11, breaking a tie entering the day with Michele Tremblay (2017) and Val Kujan (1993).
Cate Burns made four saves to headline a now historic defense for the Saints which posted a program-record fifth consecutive clean sheet, running their shutout streak to a remarkable 512:47, just 40 seconds shy of the benchmark set during the 2018 season.
