LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. — Siena Volleyball experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of lows before ultimately finishing off Sacred Heart 3-2 in a five-set roller coaster on Saturday at the UHY Center.
The win is vital in the Saints' push for their MAAC postseason hopes under first-year head coach Tyler Kanelos as the team moved to 12-16 overall and 7-7 in the MAAC.
At the end of the day, Siena moved ahead Marist by one game and Sacred Heart by two full games in the conference standings for the sixth and final playoff spot.
The Saints took control early, taking each of the first two sets by the scores of 25-21 before the Pioneers (8-18 overall, 5-9 MAAC) stormed back to take the third set 25-15 and fourth set by the count of 25-12.
When it appeared that the momentum had completely shifted, Siena found new life by jumping out a 6-1 advantage to begin the decisive fifth set.
Ella Treasure put down a kill to get it started followed by a kill from
Mary Claire Deacy, a bad set by SHU's Brielle Laferriere, back-to-back aces off the hand of
Natalia Clifford and another miscue by the Pioneers.
A back row attack by Clifford landed onto the court and
Gabrielle Wire fired a kill to pull ahead 8-3.
Wire continued with another kill off a feed from Clifford and a combined block by
Berra Tok and
Doga Diraz made it 10-4.
A pair of SHU attacking errors and a kill from Wire off an assist from
Alara Doganyuz pushed Siena ahead to 13-4.
The Pioneers strung together six of the next seven points to make it interesting off kills from Cristina Montanez, an ace from Abbie Hagedorn and kills from Ryleigh Short and Montanez to cut it within five.
But, Clifford's kill sealed it.
Next up, Siena will hit the road for their final four matches beginning on Friday at Manhattan (3-21, 1-13 MAAC) at 6 p.m.
