SOUTH ORANGE, NJ— A match-tying goal by
Mario Navarro Perez in the 89th minute seemed to make for a magical night for Siena Men's Soccer in its NCAA Tournament debut. But after two overtime periods and an official 1-1 tie, the Seton Hall Pirates ended a historic season for the Saints by advancing to the NCAA Second Round 3-0 on penalty kicks.
Seton Hall will take on No. 11 national seed Bryant Sunday at 6 p.m. in Smithfield, RI.
This match marked a historic moment for Siena, as it was the program's first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament following its first-ever Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship.
Bennet Glinder recorded five saves over 110 minutes, allowing only one goal. Navarro Perez scored with his only shot on goal with under 90 seconds to play.
Eric Svensson and
Martin Piedeleu assisted on Navarro Perez's match-tying tally.
The first half began with Siena's defense holding firm as Glinder made crucial saves against early shots from the Pirates. Despite the offensive pressure from the Pirates, including multiple corner kicks and attempts on goal, Glinder's performance in the net kept the score level.
Lee Mara generated Siena's primary offensive opportunity with a shot on target, but it was saved by the Pirates' Matias Molina.
As the half progressed, the Pirates continued to press with several shots, including a notable attempt from Agustin Resch that hit the top woodwork. Siena's defense remained resilient, with Glinder making a key save against Giacomo Mana's shot in the closing minutes. The half concluded with neither team able to break the deadlock, resulting in a scoreless tie at halftime.

Campbell Stalker and
Mark Cajamarca, although they did not find the target.
In the final minutes, Siena leveled the score with a goal by Navarro Perez, assisted by Svensson and Piedeleu, in the 89th minute. The junior found himself in perfect position to redirect Svensson's initial header, tucking it in the corner of the goal to essentially send the match to a first overtime.
The overtime period began with both teams vying for control. The Pirates quickly tested Siena's defense with a shot by Thomas Sellwood, which was saved by Glinder in the 94th minute. Shortly after, Liam Guske's attempt went wide left, keeping the match level. Siena's defense held strong through the period, culminating in a scoreless overtime.
Lucas Almeida attempted to break the deadlock with a shot in the 104th minute of the second overtime, but it was off target high. The period was marked by a series of fouls as both teams battled to gain an advantage, including a yellow card issued to the Pirates' Thomas Sellwood. Despite the efforts from both sides, neither team managed to score, concluding the second overtime.
The match between the Saints and the Pirates concluded with a tense shootout following a 1-1 draw in regulation and extra time. Siena's efforts in the shootout were thwarted as
Tomislav Vrdoljak, Piedeleu, and Svensson were unable to convert their attempts, each being stopped by the Pirates' goalkeeper Molina.
The Pirates capitalized on their opportunities as Mans Saebbo, Konstantin Donalies, and Axel Berglund each successfully found the back of the net. With these conversions, the Pirates secured the shootout victory.
