Saints Lock Down Brown

Siena Posts Best Defensive Showing in Four Years in 62-46 Triumph

PROVIDENCE, RI – Defense travels. Siena Basketball held Brown scoreless for 8:25 in the second half to punctuate a stellar defensive effort in a 62-46 victory over the Bears at the Pizzitola Sports Center.

The 46 points were the fewest allowed by a Siena (2-0) team in four years, dating back to a 47-40 win vs. Saint Peter's on Jan. 23, 2021. The Saints also held Brown to just 29.3% from the field, also marking the program's best showing in four years since limiting Iona to only 25.5% on Mar. 10, 2021.

Preseason Second Team All-MAAC selection Gavin Doty poured in an efficient 21 points on 9-12 shooting and was a +26 for Siena, which has opened the season with consecutive 16-point wins. Antonio Chandler added nine points for the Saints, which also held Brown to just 4-16 from three while turning over the Bears 16 times.

Adrian Urchidiuno led all Brown players with 11 points albeit on only 4-15 shooting.

Siena got off to a hot start for the second straight game, opening an 18-7 lead midway through the opening half. The Saints held the Bears to just 28% shooting in the first half to take a 29-19 lead at the break.

The Siena defense then kicked it up a notch further to put the game out of reach midway through the final stanza. The Saints forced Brown to misfire on all 11 of their shot attempts while committing five turnovers during their 8:25 scoreless run, while scoring 10 unanswered themselves to increase the lead to as much as 23 at 47-24 with 10:07 remaining.

Tasman Goodrick narrowly missed a second straight double-double, chipping in eight points and 10 rebounds (five offensive) for Siena which held a 40-22 advantage in points in the paint. Goodrick added three of nine steals for the Saints, which harbored a 19-8 margin in points off turnovers.

Siena will seek its second straight 3-0 start when they travel to sister-school St. Bonaventure for the annual battle for the Br. Ed Coughlin Franciscan Cup Wednesday at 7 p.m.
