Iona defeated Siena (13-17, 8-8 MAAC) in a straight-set victory, winning 25-13, 25-23, 25-20 at the Hynes Athletics Center on Saturday.
Siena fell to 13-17 overall with an 8-8 record in the MAAC. Iona's improved to 10-20 overall and 5-11 in MAAC play.
Mary Claire Deacy led the Saints with 10 kills on 37 swings,
Alara Doganyuz recorded 12 digs and added an ace, and
Elizabeth Phillips anchored the defense with 16 digs.
First Set
- Iona began with a quick start, taking an early 4-1 lead with contributions from Julia Leonardo and Emma Koceja.
- The Gaels extended their advantage to 12-4, benefiting from an ace by Rose Porter and multiple attacking errors by the Saints.
- Siena struggled to mount a comeback as Iona surged to a 17-5 lead, with Ezzie Thompson and Julia Leonardo key in widening the gap.
- Iona maintained control and closed the set 25-13, with Kari Smith securing the final point.
Second Set
- Iona gained early momentum with an aggressive start, including multiple kills from Julia Leonardo and a 5-1 lead.
- The Saints attempted a comeback with kills from
Elizabeth Phillips and Deacy, narrowing the gap to 13-8.
- A string of service errors and attack errors allowed Iona to maintain a lead, with the scoreboard at 18-11.
- The Saints closed the gap late, bringing the score to 24-23, but a final kill by Gabby Taylor secured the set for Iona, 25-23.
Third Set
- The Saints' early 4-1 stretch, capped by an ace from
Autumn Willmott, put them ahead 9-6.
- Julia Leonardo's four consecutive kills propelled the Gaels to a 12-9 lead midway through the set.
- Iona extended its advantage with a 7-1 run, highlighted by an ace from Rose Porter, leading 24-20.
- Iona secured the set 25-20 after an attack error by Phillips.
