Another Record-Setting Night Secures Saints MAAC Opening Win

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY— Siena Women's Basketball wreaked havoc on Monteagle Ridge Friday night. The Saints forced a whopping 44 turnovers on the strength of a program-record 29 steals, and finished just seven points shy of setting the school's all-time scoring benchmark, thumping Niagara 107-69 to open Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at the Gallagher Center.

Francesca Schiro delivered an outstanding performance, scoring 32 points on 12-of-16 shooting, alongside six steals. This marked the first time in her career she dropped 30 points, making her Siena's first 30-point scorer since Dec. 30, 2024. Kaiya Rain Tucker achieved the team's first double-double of the season with 12 points and 14 rebounds, behind a career high in rebounds, while also securing four steals and two blocks. Valencia Fontenelle-Posson distributed seven assists and collected three steals, while Genevive Wedemeyer added 14 points and six steals.

Siena (3-7, 1-0) initiated play with a robust offensive performance, quickly taking the lead with a 7-0 run to open the game. Showing efficiency in the paint with 22 points, they capitalized on turnovers and fast breaks. Despite brief responses from the Purple Eagles (0-10, 0-1), Siena maintained control and ended the quarter ahead 35-21, punctuated by Jamariah Turner's 3-pointer with two seconds remaining. The 35 points scored marked Siena's highest in a single quarter this season, surpassing the 33 scored in their previous game against Central Connecticut State.

The second quarter saw Siena surge ahead, highlighted by Wedemeyer's three-pointer at 8:18, assisted by Schiro, stretching their lead to 17 points. Despite several missed opportunities, Siena sustained pressure with multiple steals, including two by Schiro, preserving momentum. The Purple Eagles closed the gap, however, punctuated with a late three-pointer by Talia Dial, but Siena led 50–45 at the end of the quarter. In the first half, Siena scored 53 points, the most in a single half since their game against Rider on Jan. 26, 2023.

Siena dominated the third quarter, launching a decisive 10–0 run, highlighted by Schiro's layup and free throw at 9:29. Capitalizing on turnovers, Schiro and Nicole Melious contributed key steals and baskets, extending their lead.  Siena's defense forced 10 turnovers in the frame, constraining the Purple Eagles' scoring opportunities, and concluded the quarter with an 84–53 lead.

Despite some late turnovers, Siena maintained their momentum throughout the fourth quarter, concluding with a decisive 107-69 victory over the Purple Eagles.

Siena will complete its Western New York trip at 1 p.m. Sunday against Canisius at Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo, New York.
