Siena Tops Canisius to Complete Western New York Sweep

BUFFALO, NY — For the second consecutive season, Siena Women's Basketball is heading home with a clean sweep of its Western New York trip. The Saints (4-7, 2-0) defeated Canisius (2-9, 0-2), 73-56, at the Koessler Athletic Center Sunday afternoon for their second win in three days against conference foes from Western New York.

Siena capitalized on 31 Golden Griffins turnovers to help secure the win. Siena dominated the boards with 24 offensive rebounds, resulting in 22 second-chance points.

Nicole Melious led the team with a season-high 19 points, converting 9 of 18 field goal attempts. Francesca Schiro contributed 14 points and added three assists while collecting four rebounds. Valencia Fontenelle-Posson recorded seven rebounds and two steals, alongside scoring nine points. Caydence Hadley contributed seven points and tallied two steals in the game.

The Saints opened the game with a strong defensive presence, forcing multiple turnovers and recording six steals in the first quarter. However, a 9-3 Canisius run over the final six minutes of the first put Siena in a 14-12 deficit entering the second.

Siena asserted control early in the second quarter with an 8–0 run, highlighted by Schiro's layup and subsequent 3-pointer, establishing a five-point lead. Melious contributed significantly, scoring a fast-break layup at 5:37 and another jumper at 3:53, extending Siena's advantage. The Golden Griffins attempted to regain momentum with a few scoring plays, but Siena maintained a strong presence on the offensive boards, securing nine offensive rebounds. The quarter concluded with a free throw from Jamariah Turner, and Siena led 35–29 at halftime.

Siena surged early in the third quarter with a key 3-pointer by Wedemeyer at 9:26, extending their lead to 38–30. Siena maintained momentum as Hadley added a 3-pointer at 7:51, pushing their advantage to 41–33. Despite the Golden Griffins narrowing the gap late in the quarter, Siena held firm, with Melious converting a layup at 6:30, contributing to a 43–33 score. The quarter concluded with Siena slightly trailing in the quarter, 19–17, but hanging on to a four-point lead.

A 21–8 run in the fourth quarter created separation for the Saints, fueled by strong play in the paint where they scored 18 points. Schiro and Fontenelle-Posson contributed key baskets early in the quarter, extending Siena's lead. Wedemeyer added impact by scoring and converting a free throw, pushing the margin further. Siena's defense held the Golden Griffins to just two successful field goals in the quarter, sealing the game with a 73–56 victory.

Looking ahead, Siena will host Mount St. Mary's at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 1 at the UHY Center.
