For nearly 45 minutes, Siena Men's Lacrosse played from behind and continued to fight hard to lock the score twice in the late stages of its road game at LIU on Saturday.
While the Saints were able to make a dramatic comeback attempt to tie at 11 and then again at 12-12 on goals by
Travis Fry and
Ryan McCarthy, Siena did not find the go-ahead mark and dropped a heart breaker 13-12 at Bethpage FCU Stadium.
In a déjà vu like performances, the teams went back-and-forth at a frenetic pace only to find the Sharks on the winning end of a one-goal win in a game that was decided in the final minutes.
Owen Stefanko, who scored an overtime winner on Hickey Field last season to stun the Saints, notched the winner once again, but this time it came with just 2:44 remaining in regulation.
Siena (1-2) did another sound job on the face off, winning 19 of 28 behind the fantastic start of upstart freshman
Logan Banek and had the edge in ground balls as well, winning out there at 26-19.
Banek led the team with 12.
But turnovers cost the Saints throughout as Siena committed 17 on the day and were -7 in that category.
LIU (3-1) took its largest lead of the game at 7-3 when Ben McIssac scored on a feed from Mark Regan with 11:09 remaining in the second quarter, but the Saints stormed back by netting eight of the next 12 on goals from
Pratt Reynolds, two goals including a man-up goal by
Patrick Linton, Banek,
Will Edell,
Patrick Radomski and a pair from Fry to get the equalizer.
In the seesaw affair, McCarthy did break the 100 career points plateau to become the 32
nd member in Siena program's history to accomplish that feat.
The senior from Northport, NY, finished with a goal and a team-high five assists.
Fry finished with a hat trick while
Andrew Arcuri made 13 saves in goal to lead the Saints.
Siena returns to action next Sunday, March 2 at Dartmouth at 1 p.m.
