LOUDONVILLE, NY – For the second straight week – and now conference-leading fourth time this season – Siena Basketball freshman standout
Gavin Doty is the Hercules Tires Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week. The Fulton, New York native nearly averaged a double-double over the weekend, posting 17.5 points and 9.0 rebounds over a pair of games vs. Niagara and Canisius.
Doty, who previously earned MAAC Rookie of the Week honors on Jan. 6, Feb. 3, and Feb. 17, shot 71% from the field and was a perfect 11-11 from the free throw line this past weekend.
Doty posted his team-leading fifth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds in a victory over the Purple Eagles Friday. On Sunday, he established a new career-high and led all scorers with 23 points against the Golden Griffins, while adding eight rebounds and three steals.
Doty is now averaging 10.5 points and a team-high 5.8 rebounds while appearing in all 28 games including 13 consecutive starts during his rookie campaign. He ranks fifth overall in the MAAC in double-doubles (five), and eighth in field goal percentage (.510), albeit first amongst all true guards. Doty also leads the Saints amongst all qualifiers in free throw percentage (.779), while standing second on the team in steals (31).
Doty continues to be on a tear over the past two months. Spanning his past 18 games starting back on Dec. 17, the freshman is averaging 14.4 points and 7.9 rebounds, punctuated by all five of his double-doubles coming over that time.
Doty and the Saints have the league bye Friday, before returning to action by opening March Sunday at Mount St. Mary's at 2 p.m.
