Taking on a former CWPA Top 25 team to conclude its MAAC opening weekend, Siena Water Polo pushed the Villanova Wildcats to the brink Sunday morning from VMI Aquatic Center in Lexington, VA. The Saints were ultimately topped by the Wildcats, 18-14.
Lucia Fernandez Caballero (5) and
Catherine Williamson (3) combined for eight of Siena's (3-15, 1-2) goals. Williamson got things going with the first goal of the morning before Villanova rattled off four in a row. The sides exchanged two scores each - with Fernandez Caballero and Williamson finding the back of the net for Siena - for the Wildcats to lead 6-3 after one.
The Saints got within two by halftime at a 10-8 score thanks to a hat-trick in the frame by
Rebecca Currie. The Green and Gold drew even to start the second half with quick
Finn Magill and Fernandez Caballero goals, but Villanova closed the third on a 4-1 run to lead 14-11 entering the fourth.
Villanova didn't let the Saints get within striking distance in the fourth - maintaining no less than a two-goal lead in the win.
The Saints are set to play their only two home matches of the season next Saturday, Mar. 22, at 10 a.m. against Mount St. Mary's, and 5 p.m. against Iona from the Siena Swim Center.
