LOUDONVILLE, NY - After 18 matches this season, Siena Water Polo had the opportunity to play before its home crowd on Saturday, hosting the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers and the Iona Gaels in a pair of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference contests. The Saints fell to the Mount in their first outing 15-11 before Iona used an 11-6 advantage in the second half to win 17-15 later in the day.
The Mount 15, Siena 11
The sides exchanged goals early on with
Rebecca Currie and
Lucia Fernandez Caballero finding the back of the net for the Saints to help even the score at 2-2 midway through the first. The Mount notched two unanswered to take its first multi-goal lead of the day before
Catherine Williamson scored with one second left to make it 4-3 after the first.
Williamson completed the hat-trick in the second with two more goals, while Fernandez Caballero added another one to her line as well. However, the Mount put up four in the quarter to carry an 8-6 lead into halftime. Currie registered both Siena goals in the third while the Mountaineers added four more to their total to extend their lead to 12-8 going into the fourth.
Fernandez Caballero completed her hat-trick with a goal in the fourth, while Currie and
Quincy Frommelt aided in cutting Siena's deficit to three goals with just under five minutes to play. However, the Mount scored one more just inside of two minutes that put the game away.
Iona 17, Siena 15
After honoring senior
Cece White prior to the game, the Saints came out clicking with goals by
Catherine Williamson (twice),
Lucia Fernandez Caballero, and
Finn Magill to lead 4-3 entering the second. Thanks to
Quincy Frommelt and Fernandez Caballero, Siena extended its advantage to three goals midway through the second frame.
Iona came back with one score, however, three consecutive goals by Frommelt, Magill, and Williamson helped bring the Saints into the break with a 9-6 edge.
The Gaels slowly chipped away at Siena's lead come the end of the third. Trailing 12-7, Iona scored four consecutive goals to come within one goal for the first time since the first quarter - making it a 12-11 game. The sides traded goals throughout much of the fourth until the Saints held a 15-14 lead with 3:41 to go.
Iona then tied the game at the 3:27 mark before taking the lead with 1:44 to, and adding the final mark with 1:01 to play to complete the comeback.
The Saints return to action at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Apr. 5, to take on La Salle in a neutral site match at Villanova.
