LATHAM, NY – Siena Men's Tennis struck back with a gut-check conference opening 4-3 win over Merrimack on Saturday at Tri-City Fitness.
Wins from sophomore
Oscar Martinez, senior
Maxwell Acri, sophomore
Dylan Breen and freshman
Emilio Zavala Salinas got the job done for Siena (2-7, 1-0 MAAC), who clinched earlier in the match on Acri's victory while two courts were still in progress.
Playing from his customary number one singles position, Martinez took care of business with a 6-4, 6-1 win against Henrik Lindeman.
Acri pulled out a 7-6 (3), 6-3 win against Kabir Chhabria from the number four spot while Breen rallied back after dropping the opening set 0-6 to defeat Charles Robertson 7-6 (1), 6-1.
In the number six position, Zavala Salinas topped Valentin Riveros 6-2, 6-1.
"We didn't need to be perfect today," said Siena head tennis coach
Alex Van Cott. "But the last few matches, we have done a good job of competing point in and point out. That was the difference today. Good job by Breen for getting himself back on track after being down big quickly."
Next, Siena will return home to host Sacred Heart (3-4, 1-0 MAAC) next Friday, March 14 at 6:45 p.m. at Tri-City Fitness.
