Siena Surges Past Colgate

Two Crooked Innings Lead to Two Wins

LOUDONVILLE, NY - In the team's first taste of action in the Capital Region this season, Siena Softball played host to the Colgate Raiders following a location change that moved the doubleheader from Hamilton, NY, to Siena Softball Field. The Saints made good use of the home field advantage with a 7-0 win in game one, as well as a 6-2 victory in game two.

Siena 7, Colgate 0

Alissa Eimont worked out of a pair of early Colgate hits to begin the game and move out of the top of the first unharmed. This led to the Saints jumping on the board first as Chloe Cummings began the Siena half with a single, and later touched home on a wild pitch. Then in the second Carlie Venables delivered a one-out single to plate Ashley Giampolo from second.

Meanwhile, Eimont allowed just one baserunner between the second and fourth innings - coming on a Raiders single in the fourth - to keep the Saints ahead 2-0. Giampolo added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI triple which scored pinch runner Jazlyn Small-Yu from second.

Lauren Melton added to Siena's lead in the home half of the fifth, singling in Cummings with one out in the frame. This led to the freshman Melton scoring just one batter later on a Colgate error at third base, pushing the lead to 5-0. Not long after, Gianna DiMeglio ripped a two-RBI single to make it 7-0 moving into the sixth. Prior to DiMeglio's hit, Emma Petersen reached on a double to record the 100th hit of her collegiate career.

Gracie Goewey relieved Eimont in the circle with the game in control in the top of the sixth, and kept Colgate off the board as the game moved into the seventh with the Saints still leading by seven. The Raiders loaded the bases with one out in the seventh in hopes to mount a comeback, but Goewey kept the shutout intact and closed the door on game one.

Siena 6, Colgate 2

After setting down the Raiders in order to open game two, Kaycie Kennedy worked around a leadoff hit by pitch and a two out walk in the second inning to keep the game even entering the Siena half of the frame. Similarly, Alexa Acker of Colgate kept the Saints quiet over the first pair to enter the third scoreless.

Quinn Livessay notched the first hit of the game in the top of the fourth, but Kennedy kept the Raiders off the board to keep the pitcher's duel going into the middle portions of the contest until the bottom of the fifth.

There, Carlie Venables connected for Siena's first hit of the game with one away. McKenzie Swinson followed with a base hit while the two were left on base with two outs. Then the Saints put together a two-out rally for the books. Gianna DiMeglio scored the pair on a single before coming on an Emma Petersen RBI single. One batter later, Cali DeLawder smacked a three-run home run for the first of her career, making it 6-0 going into the sixth.

Colgate responded with two in the sixth on a two-run home run, but Alissa Eimont came in and kept the Raiders from putting any more damage on the board. The game one winner went on to finish off the contest in the seventh to complete the sweep.

The Saints open Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action on Tuesday, Mar. 25, with two games at Quinnipiac. Game one from Hamden, CT, is set for 2 p.m.
