Box Score Despite a valiant comeback attempt trailing by as many as five goals in the second half, Siena Water Polo fell to the La Salle Explorers 17-15 in a neutral site contest from Villanova, PA, Saturday evening.
Catherine Williamson willed the Siena offense with seven goals - five of which coming in the fourth period.
Lucia Fernandez Caballero and
Rebecca Currie also had hat-tricks in the match.
Through one period of play, La Salle was off to a 4-1 lead with the lone Saints goal belonging to Currie - whose tally made it 2-1 at the time. The Explorers maintained a multi-goal lead throughout the second, as Siena couldn't come within more than two - with the score being 9-5 in favor of La Salle entering the break.
Trailing 11-6 just over midway through the third period, Currie scored to begin a stretch of four consecutive Siena goals, with others coming from
Quincy Frommelt, Fernandez Caballero, and another from Currie to make it a one goal game 48 seconds to play in the frame.
La Salle went on to score three straight of its own to go up 14-10 with 6:43 to play, but another four-goal Siena run evened the score for the first time since 0-0. Each of the four scores came from Williamson, who erased the deficit in a matter of three minutes.
However, La Salle pressured the red-hot sophomore to end the game, and finished on a 3-1 run to take the conference bout,
Siena will finish its weekend at Villanova at 11 a.m. Sunday against #19 Wagner.
