A tough first quarter put Siena Women's Lacrosse in an early four-goal deficit that it would not be able to rally back from as the Saints went on the road and took a 12-10 defeat at the hands of Mount St. Mary's from Emmitsburg, MD on Saturday afternoon in a conference matchup.
Siena (2-8, 0-2 MAAC) trailed 6-2 at the end of one with
Elizabeth Wamp providing the only lead on the day with the first goal on the board at the 12:27 mark.
The Mountaineers responded with five straight goals capped by Anna Salerno's mark at 1:53 to make it a 5-1 advantage.
Olivia Nicholson came back with a woman-up goal off a feed from
Grace Dobrzynski to begin a 5-2 run by the Saints to cut the lead to 7-6 by halftime.
Mount St. Mary's (6-4, 2-0 MAAC) scored back-to-back goals by Salerno and Anna McQuay to go back up by three goals with 9:40 remaining in the third quarter.
Nicholson notched her third goal of the afternoon at 5:14 unassisted, but Madison Harmening came right back to push the lead back to three.
The teams traded off the next four goals with Dobryznski scoring off the feed from
Grace Jones at 12:09 in the fourth quarter. Brooke Molchanoff responded with a score and an assist from Harmening at 7:01.
Cassidy Bonura scored unassisted at 5:03 to pull the Saints within two, but Salerno put in her fifth goal of the afternoon at four minutes even remaining in the game.
Nicholson's fourth tally at 3:19 provided one last chance for Siena, but that is where the score remained.
Mount St. Mary's held a 19-9 advantage in ground balls and a 14-10 edge in draw controls. The Mountaineers had slight edges in shots (25-21) and shots on goal (18-16).
Siena will be back in action on Wednesday when the Saints host Manhattan (2-8 overall, 1-1 MAAC) at 3 p.m.
