In its second trip to Madeira Beach, FL, this season, Siena Softball played its first two of five weekend games at the Make it Happen games on Friday against Chattanooga (UTC) and Central Michigan (CMU). The Saints fell to UTC in the first meeting between the programs, 8-1, before putting together a thrilling, 7-6 come-from-behind 10th inning win over CMU for what was the program's first win over the Chippewas in the third meeting between the teams.
Chattanooga 8, Siena 1 (5)
As the designated away team, the Saints opened the scoring in the top of the first. Walks in the frame by
Chloe Cummings,
Emma Petersen, and
Madi Silber allowed
Ashley Giampolo to earn an RBI with her own walk on a full count to lead 1-0.
The Mocs rallied with two outs in the bottom half, using a base hit and a double to even the score before
Alissa Eimont escaped the inning without further damage. Both sides went relatively quiet in the second, and the Saints struck out in order in the third, while UTC hung four runs in the third to claim a 5-1 lead.
UTC added three more in the bottom half to extend its lead to 8-1.
McKenzie Swinson collected Siena's first hit in the top of the fifth on a double to center but only reached as far as a third.
Siena 7, CMU 6 (10)
Of 13 combined runs in game two, just one came prior to the bottom of the fifth when CMU scored on a sacrifice fly to open the game in the top of the first. From there,
Kaycie Kennedy pitched cleanly through the seventh inning, and received her first touch of run support in the Siena half of the fifth.
Ashlee Sweet led off with a single, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Carlie Venables.
McKenzie Swinson wasted no time taking advantage of Sweet in scoring position, driving a single past shortstop to tie the game.
The final 11 combined runs came in the extra frames, starting with one in the top of the eight to put CMU ahead. The Saints quickly in the bottom half when
Chloe Cummings, who started the eighth on second, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and came in on a fielder's choice. The teams traded runs again in the ninth until the wild 10th inning came around.
It was the first time either side scored multiple runs in the game, and CMU did so by hanging three in the top half to take a convincing the-run advantage with three outs to go.
But the Saints refused to go down without a fight. With Venables starting on second,
Ashley Giampolo and Cummings worked walks - Giampolo doing so on a full count - to load the bases with no outs.
Lauren Melton then ate a two-strike pitch to score Venables from third and bring Siena within one.
Following a pitching change,
Gracie Goewey singled down the right field line to bring home Cummings and Giampolo to tie the game, as well as send Melton to third. With
Emma Petersen up, a wild pitch allowed the speedy Melton to race home for the winning run and complete the comeback.
Siena will take on UTC at 11 a.m. Saturday morning, followed by LIU at 1:30 p.m.
