LATHAM, NY – Siena Men's Tennis is back in the MAAC postseason for the third time in the past four seasons after showing out with a 5-2 victory against Niagara on Senior Day on the outdoor courts of nearby Shaker High School on Sunday evening.
Siena Tennis head coach
Alex Van Cott, who was named to the position in August of 2024 after serving as the head tennis professional at the Saratoga Regional YMCA, reached the postseason in his first season at the helm.
Before the match began, three seniors including
Maxwell Acri,
Fabio Loch Varella and
Elijah Zifferblatt were honored in a pre-match tribute.
Siena (5-11 overall, 4-2 MAAC) took the early advantage by taking two of three doubles matches to start behind the duos of
Emilio Zavala Salinas and
Oscar Martinez as well as the team of
Dylan Breen and F. Varella.
In singles play, the Saints won from the first four slots with wins coming from
Oscar Martinez, F. Varella, Acri and
Bruno Loch Varella.
While Martinez, F. Varella and Acri all won in straight sets, B. Varella showed resolve by rallying back after dropping the opening set.
The Purple Eagles fell to 6-9 overall and 3-3 in the MAAC.
Siena is currently tied with Fairfield in second place in the MAAC standings at 4-2. They'll be joined by Quinnipiac, who is 7-0.
