Siena Women's Lacrosse rode its staunch defense and received a trio of big offensive performances from
Kelly Logue,
Olivia Nicholson and
Grace Dobrzynski as the Saints topped Merrimack 10-7 on Wednesday at Duane Stadium in North Andover, MA, to reach the MAAC postseason for a sixth consecutive season.
The Saints (7-8 overall, 5-2 MAAC) shook off a slow start, trailing 3-2 after the first quarter in which Lindsay Atkinson got hot with three of her team-high four goals coming into the opening frame.
But Siena shifted into high gear from there, outscoring the Warriors 7-2 in the middle quarters to take a 9-5 lead entering the final stanza.
Logue secured a hat trick by the 14:16 mark remaining in the second quarter while Nicholson scored her hat trick in roughly one quarter of action between the 11:08 mark left in the third quarter and 13:12 remaining in the fourth quarter to increase the lead to 10-5.
Cassidy Bonura did a bit of everything as the sophomore led the Saints with eight draw controls along with two caused turnovers, a ground ball and also scored on a free-position attempt in the second quarter.
In net, freshman
McAllister Salter remained undefeated in goal as the freshman improved to 5-0 in starts that she has made this season.
The Tappan, NY native made five saves and now has limited her opponents to just 7.2 goals per game since she was inserted into the lineup when the calendar flipped to April.
Siena held hefty advantages in shots (35-17) and shots on goal (26-12).
The Saints were 4-of-7 on free-position attempts while Merrimack was 3-for-3.
The Warriors fell to 1-14 overall and 0-8 in conference play.
Siena head coach
Danielle Schwan-Tetreault has now led the Saints to playoff berths in consecutive seasons after taking over the head coaching position.
Siena is now in a three-way tie for third place in the MAAC standings along with Niagara and Iona. The top eight teams qualify for the postseason this year in the conference.
Siena will be back in action this Saturday for Senior Day when it hosts Niagara (7-9, 5-2 MAAC) for a special senior day tribute at noon followed by the game at 1 p.m. at Hickey Field.
