LOUDONVILLE, NY - Siena Softball clashed with the Fairfield Stags Tuesday from Siena Softball Field. The Stags (19-21, 12-5) took both games of the twin bill from the Saints (26-18-1, 10-7-1) with an 8-3 win in game one, and a 4-1 victory in game two.
Fairfield 8, Siena 3
Both
Alissa Eimont and Stags' starter Alyssa Wineberg wired through a clean first inning until a crooked second set Fairfield up for the remainder of the afternoon. The Stags loaded the bases with nobody out, but Eimont retired the next batter on a strikeout, while a relay from
Cali DeLawder back to herself on a wild pitch canned the runner from third trying to score.
However, a walk reloaded the bases with two away - leading to five Fairfield runs with two outs in the frame. The first two came on a single to center, with two more touching home on a base knock to right. Afterwards,
Gracie Goewey entered the circle for the Saints with the final run coming on a ball to the backstop.
Siena notched its first run of the game in the bottom of the third.
McKenzie Swinson reached on a double to open the frame - serving as the 100th hit of her career - and came in two batters later on a fielder's choice to the outfield.
Fairfield added three more in the top of the fourth, while Siena plated one in the fifth on an
Ashley Giampolo RBI walk, and one in the seventh when
Carlie Venables doubled in a run.
The Saints out-hit the Stags 10-7 in the game - two each off the bats of Venables,
Chloe Cummings, and
Emma Petersen - but stranded 10 runners on base.
Fairfield 4, Siena 1
The Stags jumped on starting pitcher
Alissa Eimont in the top of the first, manufacturing the opening run of the game after a leadoff double led to a sacrifice bunt, and then a RBI groundout. A two-RBI single in the top of the second quickly put the Saints in a 2-0 deficit.
However, the Green and Gold looked primed to make a dent in the bottom of the second.
Gracie Goewey opened the inning with a double, while
Carlie Venables reached on an infield single. After
Gianna DiMeglio worked a walk, Siena was cooking with the bases loaded and no outs.
The next batter,
Ella Milante, worked a walk to bring in the team's first run of the game. However, Fairfield pitcher Peyton Shields retired the next three in order to escape the jam.
Fairfield extended its lead to 4-1 in the top of the 4th with a one out, two-RBI single that led to
Kaycie Kennedy entering the game in the circle. The senior got out of the frame without further damage thanks to a strike 'em out, throw 'em out.
While Kennedy went the remaining three innings without allowing a run, Shields did the same for the Stags. Siena was able to get four runners on over the final four innings - just one time advancing to third - and stranded nine in the game in the three-run loss.
The Saints are back in action this weekend to host Canisius for a three-game series. The teams are set to meet for the first two Saturday, with game one of the doubleheader scheduled for noon. Prior to game one there will also be a special Senior Day ceremony taking place roughly 20 minutes before first pitch.
