LOUDONVILLE, NY - Back-to-back complete game performances by
Gracie Goewey and
Kaycie Kennedy clinched a series victory for Siena Softball (28-18-1, 12-7-1) over the visiting Canisius Golden Griffins (21-22, 11-8) with a 5-1 win in the opening game of the day, followed by a 6-1 victory in the latter game Friday afternoon.
Siena 5, Canisius 1
Gracie Goewey improved to 6-1 on the season after going the distance with just one earned run allowed by way of a seventh inning solo home run. The sophomore surrendered just five hits over the course of the game, and fanned 10 batters while walking none.
Goewey received run support right away as the Saints put up two runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Emma Petersen drove in
Megan Klein on a single before touching home on a
Cali DeLawder sacrifice fly.
From there, Goewey pitched with the two-run edge through the fifth inning when her offense gave her three more runs. Petersen pushed two more scores, credited with one RBI on a single up the middle scoring Klein, while a fielding error in center allowed
McKenzie Swinson to also come in. Another error that inning plated Petersen to make it 5-0.
The sophomore Goewey tossed a clean sixth until the lone blemish in the seventh, however, still sealing the game one victory with her performance.
Siena 6, Canisius 1
Kaycie Kennedy was the next Siena pitcher to dazzle Friday, going all seven innings with just one run allowed - also on a late inning home run - while giving up just three hits. The senior struck out seven to just one walk as well.
One run in the bottom of the first gave Kennedy room to work with early in the game, while
Gracie Goewey and
Gianna DiMeglio drove in one run each in the third, and two off the bat of
Ella Milante to make it 5-0.
Then in the fourth,
Chloe Cummings came in on a wild pitch to extend Siena's lead to 6-0. Sofita Escoto connected for a solo home run in the sixth, but the unrattled Kennedy finished the job during the rest of the evening.
Goewey accounted for three of the team's hits in game two while
Megan Klein had two. Milante drove in three runs in the win.
The Saints and Golden Griffins are set to conclude the three-game series at 1 p.m. Sunday. Siena will also honor its graduating class of 2025 with a Senior Day ceremony approximately 20 minutes to first pitch.
