LOUDONVILLE, NY – For the first time since 2014, the Siena Men's Lacrosse team earned a share of the MAAC Regular Season Championship.
The Saints delivered a bombardment of goals—the most in a game since May 4, 1982—as four players notched five points apiece to the tune of a 24-9 thumping of rival Marist on Wednesday in front of a packed crowd of fans at Hickey Field.
Siena (9-4 overall, 7-1 MAAC) earns a bye, has clinched the No. 2 seed in the MAAC Tournament and advances to the MAAC Semifinals on Thursday, May 1 at 7 p.m. against an opponent yet to be determined on Sacred Heart's Campus Field in Fairfield, CT.
After an early 2-0 deficit, Siena came out fast and furious scoring eight goals in both the first and second quarters.
Travis Fry and
Pratt Reynolds each had five-goal afternoons while
Conor Hufnagel had four goals and an assist and
Patrick Radomski scored three goals with two assists.
Fry had completed a hat trick at the 1:41 mark of the first quarter while Reynolds had a hat trick by the 9:49 mark of the second quarter.
Hufnagel had three of his goals in the third quarter while Radomski completed his hat trick early in the fourth quarter.
On defense,
Andrew Arcuri was on his game as well, securing 15 saves on 24 shots on target (.625).
Siena's seven-game win streak is the longest its' had since a stretch in which the team won eight straight from March 14, 2012 through April 21, 2012.
In a match up that featured two of the conference's best face off win percentage specialists, freshman
Logan Banek outdueled the Red Foxes' Dylan Bedell.
Banek was 20-for-33 while Bedell was 14-of-32 on the evening.
Banek led the team with 11 ground balls.
Siena held a slim 50-48 advantage for shots including 35-24 for shots on goal.
Marist got as close as 8-6 with 13:43 left in the second quarter, but that's as close as they would come as the Saints poured it on by scoring the game's next 10 goals.
In the third quarter, Marist received goals from the MAAC's top points per game scorer in Collin Patrick and Steven Cain, but Siena responded with a pair of Hufnagel goals to close out the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Radomski scored on a feed from
Caden Olmstead followed by a goal from
Joe Valenza off a feed from
Jacob Wells.
Jake Deacy scored the Red Foxes' final goal while Olmstead concluded out the scoring the last two goals of the game.
