Late Merrimack Onslaught Stuns Saints

Warriors Explode For 14 Unanswered to Rally For 16-13 Win

Merrimack exploded for 14 unanswered runs – 13 of which came over the seventh and eighth innings – to stun Siena Baseball 16-13 in North Andover, Massachusetts.

Siena (8-20, 4-7) seemed well on its way to its first conference series victory of the season, opening a commanding 11-0 lead in the third inning while still holding a comfortable 13-3 advantage heading into the home half of the seventh.

But the Merrimack (10-20-1, 7-7) bats came to life in a major way late. The Warriors erupted for eight runs in the home half of the seventh, highlighted by a Frankie Ferrentino grand slam and capped by a three-run double from Logan Castellano, who had homered to account for the other run earlier in the inning. Seven of the eight runs in the frame came after two were out.

Merrimack then tacked on five more during a decisive eighth inning, capped by the go-ahead three-run home run from Matt DeShiro. The Warriors crushed six total home runs for the afternoon, four of which came during the two definitive frames.

Jake Sparks homered twice and knocked in five runs to pace a Saints offense which hit four total home runs of their own, setting a season-high for a second straight day. Aidan Paradine and Nick Bergamotto also homered for Siena.

Sparks also registered four of the season-high 17 hits for the Saints, who also matched a season-best with 13 runs scored. Josh Thompson contributed three hits, while three others added multi-hit performances.

Siena will look to quickly put this one behind them and bounce back for the decisive rubber game of the series Sunday at noon.
