Siena Men's Lacrosse pounced on Manhattan early and often, grabbing an early four-goal lead that it would not relinquish as the Saints extended its win streak to four straight games with another strong all-around effort that resulted in a 12-8 road conference victory at Gaelic Park in Riverdale on Saturday afternoon.
Siena (6-4 overall, 4-1 MAAC) moved into third place all alone in the MAAC standings and now sit just one-half game on the win side behind leaders Sacred Heart and Canisius, who are both 5-1.
Manhattan dropped to 5-5 overall and 3-2 in the MAAC.
The Saints had an ideal first quarter, grabbing a 4-0 lead after senior midfielder
Liam Hassett scored bookended goals around strikes from both
Carter Fort and
Conor Hufnagel.
As the Jaspers eased back into the game and cut the deficit down to 5-3 on a man-up opportunity by Jack Smith, Siena had just the answer it needed to conclude the first half with goals by both
Travis Fry and Hufnagel in the final minute before Siena captured a 7-3 advantage heading into the break.
McCarthy assisted on both of those goals and finished with six assists, a number that tied his career-high he set back two games ago versus Merrimack on March 26.
In the second half, Siena padded onto their lead by outscoring the Jaspers 4-2 in the frame.
Scores by
Jack Cavaioli, Hufnagle and two goals from
Patrick Radomski, who lasered one in and then worked his way onto the doorstep of the goal for the other, pushed it to a six-goal advantage for Siena.
At the "X", freshman
Logan Banek put together another strong performance by winning 12 of 22 face offs (.545) and had eight ground balls.
Defensively, Siena received backing from
Andrew Arcuri, who had 10 saves with a few acrobatic plays mixed in.
Mark Cummins,
R.J. Ihlefeld and McCarthy all were credited with two caused turnovers.
Ihlefeld also had seven ground balls including a key one to essentially help the Saints clinch the win.
Siena held a 45-29 advantage for shots including 22-18 for shots on goal.
The Saints also held a 32-23 edge in ground balls.
Siena returns to action Saturday, April 12 for Senior Day when it hosts Quinnipiac (2-9 overall, 2-4 MAAC) at noon.
