Complimentary softball was the name of the game for Siena in its series-securing wins over Saint Peter's from Jersey City, NJ, Thursday evening. Backed by a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference-high 16 strikeouts in the circle from
Gracie Goewey, and four RBI off the bat of
Emma Petersen, the Saints took game one 7-1. The offense erupted for 11 first inning runs in the later game while
Alissa Eimont shut the door on the Peacocks for an 11-0 shutout victory in game two.
Siena 7, Saint Peter's 1
Gracie Goewey helped her own cause in the top of the first before taking the circle in the bottom half, lacing an RBI single up the middle to score
Megan Klein from second for a 1-0 lead. While Goewey kept the Peacocks off the board over the first two innings, the bat of
Emma Petersen extended Siena's lead in the top of the third with a two-run homer - her third of the season - to make it 3-0.
Goewey continued to hold Saint Peter's scoreless throughout the middle portion of the game, allowing one hit per inning between the third and fifth. The Saints added four runs of insurance in the top of the sixth with a
McKenzie Swinson RBI double,
Chloe Cummings sacrifice fly, and two-RBI double off the bat of Petersen to push the advantage to 7-0.
The Peacocks found the board in the bottom of the sixth three batters into the frame as an unearned run came across on a Tai Turner single. Saint Peter's went on to load the bases with no outs in the inning, but Goewey fanned the next three batters in order to escape the jam, and held Saint Peter's scoreless yet again in the seventh to put game one to rest.
Petersen went 3-4 in the game with four RBI, while Goewey went 2-3 at the dish with an RBI as the two combined for five of the team's nine hits. The Saints also did not strike out once in the game as well. In the circle, Goewey struck out a career-high 16 batters - which also tied a 2025 single-game MAAC high - in the complete game win, allowing the single unearned run across seven hits.
Siena 11, Saint Peter's 0 (5)
The Saints took care of business in the first inning before
Alissa Eimont had a chance to take the rubber, coming around to score 11 times in the frame.
Siena's 11 runs came on seven hits, as well as four Saint Peter's errors.
Megan Klein,
Gracie Goewey,
Ella Milante, and
Ashlee Sweet each drove in a pair in an inning that lasted nearly 30 minutes.
Emma Petersen got things going with an RBI single to second, while Sweet delivered both her RBI on a single up the gut later that made it 5-0.
Like Sweet, Klein delivered a two-RBI hit in the first, also on a single up the middle which made it 8-0. Gowey (RBI triple) and Milante (RBI single) put the final stamp on the inning.
Eimont controlled the game from that point on, tossing the five-inning shortened game with just one hit allowed, striking out five and walking none. The redshirt-junior faced one over the minimum in an efficient showing that consisted of 59 pitches.
The Saints and Peacocks are set to complete the three-game series at 1 p.m. Friday in what is the final game of the regular season.
