LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Volleyball rebounded soundly in their nightcap with a sweep over Stonehill after a back-and-forth five-set defeat versus Belmont in the early match on Friday on day one of the Saints' hosted Clocktower Tournament presented by the Clocktower Hotel.
In the nightcap, Siena (3-5) hit a season-high .383 for the match as the trio of
Elizabeth Phillips (11 kills),
Gabrielle Wire (10 kills)
Doga Diraz (eight kills) did the brunt of the offensive damage.
Sophomore setter
Alara Doganyuz accounted for 21 assists while
Autumn Willmott and
Natalia Clifford combined for 17 digs to shore up the defensive side of the ball as Siena bested Stonehill 25-13, 25-23, 25-19.
Siena jumped out to an 8-2 lead with four kills coming from Diraz in the early going on set one. A pair of 4-0 runs followed with
Elizabeth Phillips and
Ella Treasure serving behind the line.
Siena captured a 14-9 edge after a kill by
Berra Tok and feed from Doganyuz. Wire finished it out down the stretch with the last three Siena points coming on kills.
Stonehill took an 11-5 advantage in the third set before Siena roared back with a 15-5 run sparked by a pair of kills from
Mary Claire Deacy and two from Diraz in the spurt.
Willmott served five consecutive points then Phillips finished it out with four straight points including two aces to wrap it.
The Skyhawks dropped to 1-8 on the season.
In the early match, Belmont held on to top Siena 3-2 (20-25, 25-21, 25-23, 23-25, 15-12) after a seesaw back and forth.
The teams nearly hit identical marks with the Saints hitting .240 for the match while the Bruins hit .233.
The Bruins (6-1) were led by Brooke Gilleland, who had a match-high 27 kills and Bella Mathis and Connie Kofoed, who had nine kills apiece.
The Saints received a career-high performance from Diraz, who put down 23 kills while Wire added 16 kills and Phillips contributed with eight kills.
Doganyuz had a season-high 40 assists while
Natalia Clifford also netted a new high with 18 digs.
Siena had a 5-1 lead in the fifth set after a pair of blocks from Tok and Diraz and two kills from Diraz.
Kills by Treasure and Phillips made it a 9-4 Siena lead, however Belmont surged down the stretch by winning 11 of the next 14 points.
Next up, Siena takes on Columbia (0-4) on Saturday with a 3 p.m. appropriate start time in the final match of the Clocktower Tournament.
It is an Alumni Game for the Saints.
