Men's Soccer

Rivalry Renewed

Saints and Great Danes Clash on Hickey Field Tuesday Evening

LOUDONVILLE, NY - Crosstown rivals collide at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, when Siena Men's Soccer (2-4, 1-0) welcomes the UAlbany Great Danes (2-4-1) to Hickey Field for the first time since the 2012 season.

Siena steps onto Hickey Field for the first time since hosting FDU on Sept. 3, and in doing so will play its final non-conference bout of the season. The Saints carry momentum into Tuesday's match following their 3-2 comeback victory over Manhattan in their Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opener on Sept. 20.

Preseason All-MAAC selection Mario Navarro Perez spearheaded Siena's comeback victory last Saturday, scoring the tying goal in the 80th minute and the eventual game-winner in the 87th minute, marking his first two goals of the season. Not to be forgotten, Navarro Perez had similar heroics against Manhattan in the 2024 MAAC Quarterfinals with a game-winning goal in the 84th minute to send the Saints to the semifinals.

Additionally, Siena set team single-game highs in Saturday's match with 10 points, four assists, eight shots on goal, and 11 corner kicks. Lucas Almeida had his most impactful match yet in the Green and Gold, scoring one goal and assisting on the game-winner for his first points this season. The junior also notched a season-high four shots and two on goal.

The Great Danes enter the rivalry match having lost three consecutive matches, most recently a 2-0 decision at Princeton Saturday night. Led by Ivar Gissurarson's two goals - the only multi-goal scorer on the team - UAlbany has gone two full matches without finding the back of the net and will look for their first tally since an eighth-minute score against Marist on Sept. 9. Andrej Krivokapic and Kodai Tsuzuki have split duties in goal thus far, starting three matches apiece with 270 minutes played. Krivokapic has had the upper hand with a 2-10 record, a 0.33 goals-against average (GAA), and a 0.833 save percentage to Tsuzuki's 0-2-1 mark, 1.67 GAA, and 0.583 save percentage. The Great Danes will also be in search of their first road victory of the season, carrying a 0-3-1 mark away from home.

Siena and UAlbany gear up for the 28th installment of the series and the first match to be played on Hickey Field since Sept. 23, 2012 - 13 years to the day of Tuesday's contest. The Saints have enjoyed four consecutive wins in the series dating back to 2011, out-scoring the Great Danes 6-1 over that stretch. Following 11 years without meeting, Siena topped UAlbany in a 1-0 thriller last season on Bob Ford Field by way of a 90th-minute Nick Fernandez goal.

Kelly O'Donnell and Brett Bosley have the call on ESPN+ Tuesday evening. International viewers can also watch live by clicking on the corresponding link, while fans can keep up with live pressbox X updates by clicking on the corresponding link.

Following UAlbany, the Saints remain home at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27, to host Fairfield for their first home MAAC match of the season.
