Piedeleu Pounces, Saints Stagger the Stags

Piedeleu’s Second Gives Saints Narrow 1–0 Edge Over Fairfield

LOUDONVILLE, NY - A goal in the 47th minute by freshman Martin Piedeleu was all that was needed for Siena Men's Soccer to move to 2-0 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play as the Saints defeated the visiting Fairfield Stags 1-0 from Hickey Field on Saturday afternoon.

Piedeleu's goal was his second of his rookie campaign, and he also led the Saints (3-4-1) with four shots and two shots on target. The Green and Gold finished with an 11-9 shot advantage (7-3 on-goal) over the Stags (3-4-1, 1-1), and had five corners to their one.

Bennet Glinder stopped each of Fairfield's three shots on goal to record his second consecutive clean sheet. The Siena defense also blocked a handful of potential Stags' opportunities, including a pair of set pieces midway through the second half.

In a first half where shots were 4-3 in favor of Siena, Piedeleu recorded the lone shot on goal of the opening 45 minutes, which came in at '22. Pace picked up in the second half, starting with the freshman making his way through multiple Fairfield defenders and finishing in the upper corner of the back of the net for a 1-0 Siena lead.

Including Piedeleu's tally, the sides combined for nine shots on goal in the second half. Glinder kept Fairfield's looks in front of him at '49, '61, and '62 to preserve the Siena lead and ultimately seal the league win.

Christian Amaral also had two shots in the match - one on goal - serving as the only other Saint with multiple shots. Ismail Dia, Karl Tchounjin, Lucas Almeida, and Alejandro Perez Jorda all had shots on goal as well.

The Saints return to action at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 1, with a trip to Buffalo, NY, to take on Canisius.
