Reserve Emilie Cook scored in the 74
th minute as reigning Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Champion Fairfield fought off Siena Women's Soccer 1-0 to secure its 21
st straight victory on Lessing Field.
Fairfield (8-1-1, 3-0-1) held a 26-11 shot advantage, but put only six on target, being forced to settle mostly for looks from distance against a bend, but don't break effort from the Siena (5-3-4, 2-2-1) defense. The Stags also harbored an 8-3 edge in corners.
But in the latter stages of the second half, a failed clear in deep was played by Ashley McMahon to Cook who finished as Fairfield ran its unbeaten streak to 10 straight against MAAC competition (9-0-1).
Cate Burns made five saves for the Saints who are winless in their past six meetings with the Stags (0-5-1).
Briana Neary paced the offense with four shots for Siena, which was shutout after having totaled eight goals during their three-match win streak entering play.
Katie Wright was credited with a pair of saves to earn the clean sheet for Fairfield.
The Saints face another stiff test when they return to the Capital Region to host perennial power Quinnipiac – which captured the preceding two MAAC Championships prior to Fairfield – Wednesday at 3 p.m. on Hickey Field.
