Saints Outlasted by Knights

FDU Spoils Home Opener

LOUDONVILLE, NY - Siena Men's Soccer welcomed the FDU Knights to Hickey Field Wednesday evening for its 2025 home opener. After falling behind by two goals early in the second half, the Saints battled back to cut their deficit to one but couldn't deliver the game-tying goal as the Knights held on for a 2-1 win.

Following a first half in which FDU (3-0-1) out-shot Siena (1-3) 6-2, the Saints evened the total 6-6 in the second half as the match ended with both sides putting five on target. Freshman Martin Piedeleu accounted for four of Siena's shots on goal, with one finding the back of the net for his first collegiate goal. Lee Mara added the other look on target.

FDU ended the evening with a 5-2 edge on corners, while also racking up 19 fouls in the match to Siena's 12.

Controlling the offensive for the majority of the first, the Knights recorded the first five shots of the match within the first 15 minutes of play, but just one fell into the hands of goalie Bennet Glinder to keep the match scoreless.

Mara registered Siena's first attempt in the 21st minute, which sailed high, while Benjamin Fogarty's look in the 38th went out top as the match remained even at nil at halftime.

FDU broke through in the 50th minute when Victor Labite received a feed from Takuto Nishide's free kick to the left side, heading it into the far right post. Four minutes later, a defensive miscue on the Saints' end allowed Arnau Rabassa Guillamon to beat Glinder to the ball deep in the Siena zone and poke it in for a 2-0 advantage.

Seemingly, scoring came in quick spurts in the match, as less than four minutes later Piedeleu was awarded a penalty kick. The freshman missed his free attempt but didn't give up on the rebound, collecting the comebacker and redirecting it to the opposite corner for his first career goal – also bringing the Saints within one.

The Saints had three opportunities following Piedeleu's goal, including a close-range look off the foot of Christian Amaral in the 87th minute, but couldn't deliver the equalizer.

Siena returns to the pitch on Tuesday, Sept. 9, to host Northeastern. Kickoff from Hickey Field is set for 5 p.m.
