Saints Second Half Surge Not Enough in MAAC Opener

Sacred Heart Hangs On For 1-0 Win

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Women's Soccer dominated second half action but couldn't overcome an early score as Sacred Heart edged the Saints 1-0 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener on Hickey Field.

Siena (2-2-3, 0-1) held a commanding 10-2 advantage in shots while attempting all four second half corners, but couldn't break through as they were shut out for the third straight match. Kyran Thievon made four of her five saves during the final stanza to post the clean sheet in goal for Sacred Heart (2-2-1, 1-0).

Megan Bovardi finished a 10th minute corner kick from Lindsay McShea which proved to be the difference for the Pioneers. The tally ended an impressive 198:05 shutout streak by the Saints back line.

Overall, Siena held a 14-10 margin in shots and a 5-1 advantage in corners. Catherine Rogers led the way offensively with four total shots (two on target), while Briana Neary added three (two on goal).

Reigning MAAC Defensive Player of the Week Cate Burns was strong once again in goal, posting five of her six total saves during the opening half of action.

The setback snapped a four-match unbeaten streak overall (1-0-3) for the Saints, and a 10-match regular season unbeaten streak (6-0-4) on Hickey Field.

Siena will look to bounce back when they make the trek down I-87 to battle rival Marist next Saturday at 1 p.m. in Poughkeepsie.
