LOUDONVILLE, NY — Siena Women's Basketball (7-10, 5-3 MAAC) snapped a three-game skid with a commanding 74-47 victory over Saint Peter's (3-14, 2-6 MAAC) Saturday afternoon at the UHY Center. The Saints controlled the glass by a 43-28 margin and limited the Peacocks to just five points in the third quarter to pull away.
Francesca Schiro led Siena with 20 points, shooting 6-for-7 from the free throw line while adding four assists.
Nicole Melious followed with 18 points on six three-pointers and tied a career high with five assists. Her six made three-pointers were a team single-game high for the season and two away from tying an all-time program single game mark.
Valencia Fontenelle-Posson chipped in 12 points on five field goals and matched a season high with eight rebounds, while
Kaiya Rain Tucker posted 10 points and eight rebounds.
Jamariah Turner reached a career milestone in the first quarter, knocking down a three-pointer to surpass 1,000 collegiate points.
Siena moves to 7-0 this season when taking a lead into halftime. Additionally, the team's 47 points allowed were the fewest in a game this season, its 55.1% field goal percentage was a season best, and the Green & Gold tied a season best shooting 39.1% from three.
Siena built a 19-15 lead after the opening quarter behind three first-quarter triples from Melious and steady ball movement from Schiro. Despite some early turnovers, the Saints closed the period strong on Schiro's layup in the final seconds.
The Saints gained separation in the second quarter, extending the lead to 30-18 following a Melious three with 4:57 remaining. Saint Peter's trimmed the margin late, but Schiro's jumper helped Siena take a 33-28 advantage into halftime.
Siena took full control after the break, outscoring the Peacocks 23-5 in the third quarter, marking the fewest points the Saints have allowed in a quarter this year. The Saints dominated inside and held Saint Peter's to just 2-for-14 shooting in the period, stretching the lead to 56-33 heading into the fourth.
The momentum continued in the final quarter as Siena pushed the lead past 30 behind baskets from Tucker, Melious, and Schiro. The Saints closed the game by outscoring Saint Peter's 18-14 in the fourth to secure the 27-point win.
Siena returns to action Monday, Jan. 19, when the Saints travel to Fairfield, CT, to face Fairfield at 2 p.m. at Leo D. Mahoney Arena.
