Three for All! Volleyball Snags Three Metro Weekly Awards

Deacy, Edwards, Malek All Honored for Outstanding Performances

The Siena Volleyball Team did something that has not been accomplished in nearly 20 seasons by earning three Conference weekly awards in the same week.

Sophomore right side Mary Claire Deacy was named the Metro Player of the Week, junior setter Abby Edwards earned the Metro Setter of the Week honors and redshirt senior libero Brooke Malek picked up her fourth weekly Libero of the Week award in a vote by the Metro's Sports Information Directors on Tuesday.

The last time the Saints accomplished this was on Nov. 13, 2006 when a pair of Siena Hall of Famers Christie Gustafson was named the Conference Player of the Week and Burgandy McCurty was the Rookie of the Week. In addition, Kathi Kobayashi was the Co-Defensive Player of the Week.

Redshirt senior libero Brooke Malek totaled 70 digs (6.36 digs per set) to go along with 12 assists, four aces and a kill over this past week in a 3-0 week for the Saints that included conference wins against Marist this past Tuesday, Manhattan on Friday and Iona this past Saturday.

The product of Harry Ainley High School and Edmonton, Alberta, Canada native leads the Metro in digs with 303 and ranks eighth nationally among all NCAA Division I players with an average of 4.97 digs per set.

The transfer from crosstown UAlbany became the first Saint to earn four weekly conference Libero of the Week honors in a single season, surpassing Kalehua Katagiri, who earned four weekly awards for Conference Libero of the Week, but did so over the course of two seasons (2015 and 2016).

Deacy earned her first career Metro Player of the Week honor after being named to the All-Metro Volleyball Preseason Team and having earned a pair of All-Tournament Teams earlier this season to the Mercyhurst Invitational and Siena Saints Invitational All-Tournament teams.

Deacy led the conference with 60 kills (5.45 kills per set) on a .295 hitting percentage and added another 47 digs (4.27 digs per set) with eight blocks.

The Chicago, IL native currently ranks third in the Metro in kills per set (3.59) and has totaled 219 kills and also is hitting .289 for the season (10th in the Metro).

Edwards hit a new level this past week, totaling 142 assists (12.9 assists per set) and had back-to-back 53-set performances.

The Chapin, SC native added 27 digs (2.45 digs per set) with seven blocks and six kills.

Siena (9-8, 4-1 Metro) returns to the courts on Wednesday hosting UAlbany (4-10, 1-2 America East) at 6 p.m. from the UHY Center.
