How Sweep It Is

Saints Complete First Western New York Sweep in a Decade

BUFFALO, NY – Break out the brooms. For the first time in a decade, Siena Basketball has swept the annual Western New York trip. The Saints dispatched Canisius 78-63 at the Koessler Athletic Center to complete the program's first sweep of the swing since Jan. 24-26, 2016.

Justice Shoats capped a stellar 47-point weekend with 18 of his game-high 22 points in the first half for Siena (16-7, 9-3) which has won five straight overall. The Saints also extended their road winning streak to five straight, the program's longest run since winning a program-record eight straight road games from Feb. 23, 2020 – Jan. 16, 2021.

Freshman reserve Isaiah Henderson scored a career-high 14 points to fuel the Siena three-man second unit which contributed 27 points, doubling the bench's average output (13.7). Henderson shot 4-7 from three for the Saints which improved to a perfect 9-0 in day games including an unblemished 5-0 on Sundays.

Javante Edwards tallied 18 points on 6-9 from three for Canisius (8-15, 3-9) which made 12 threes while shooting an even 40% from distance, but connected at just a 27% (10-37) clip from inside the arc.

Trailing 19-13 at the 11:35 mark, Siena responded with a decisive 27-5 run over 9:16 to seize control. Shoats and Henderson accounted for nine points apiece for the Saints which shot 10-15 (67%) during the spurt. Siena led 40-29 at the break.

The Golden Griffins never got any closer than nine in the second half as the Saints also completed their first regular season series sweep of Canisius in 10 years.

Francis Folefac finished with 14 points, nine rebounds, and a season-high five assists for Siena which held a commanding 34-12 advantage in points in the paint. Gavin Doty chopped in 12 points for the top-shooting team in the MAAC which put together a 55% shooting performance.

Bryan Ndjonga and Kahlil Singleton scored 11 points apiece for the Golden Griffins which have dropped seven straight.

The Saints have now won 10 games away from home so far this season (eight road, two neutral), matching the program's highest total in 16 years dating back to the 2009-10 MAAC Championship season.

Siena returns home to host archrival Iona Thursday night at 7 p.m. at MVP Arena in a nationally televised showdown on ESPNU.
