Quinnipiac Stymies Saints

Siena Shoots Just 37% Including 4-17 From Three in Home Setback

ALBANY, NY – Reigning Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Year Amarri Monroe scored 21 points to lead two-time defending regular season champion and preseason favorite Quinnipiac past Siena Basketball 74-62 at MVP Arena.

Jaden Zimmerman added 17 points for Quinnipiac (18-9, 11-5) which has won four straight to leapfrog Siena (17-9, 10-5) by a half game to take over third place in the MAAC Standings. Asim Jones chipped in 12 points for the Bobcats who made 10 threes.

Gavin Doty delivered his sixth double-double of the season with 21 points and a career-high 16 rebounds for the Saints which shot just 37% from the field including only 4-17 from three. Siena entered play leading the MAAC in field goal percentage (.468).

The first meeting in 376 days between the teams predicted to finish first and second according to the MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll grinded out the first half of their lone pivotal regular season meeting. Quinnipiac shot just 36%, but the Saints connected at only a 34% clip – including an uncharacteristic 8-24 (33%) from inside the arc – as the Bobcats took a 34-27 lead at the break.

Siena scored six straight to get back within as close as two at 43-41 with 12:47 left, but couldn't full get over the hump in a game which Quinnipiac led for the final 33 minutes. The Bobcats went on an 8-2 spurt down the stretch to open a double-digit advantage, and pushed the lead to as many as 15 late to prevail for the fourth time in the past five meetings in the series.

Freshman Isaiah Henderson scored a season-high 15 points off the bench for the Saints who continued a challenging six-game stretch against the other current top-six teams in the conference. Classmate Francis Folefac added 14 points for Siena which dropped into fourth place in a bunched top half of the MAAC Standings.

The Saints remained a game back of second-place Saint Peter's, but now are a half-game back of third-place Quinnipiac, while maintaining a half-game lead over fifth-place Marist. Siena now has the Red Foxes on deck for another pivotal showdown Sunday at 2 p.m. in Poughkeepsie.
