Callen Powers tossed seven strong innings and Massachusetts tacked on three insurance runs in the seventh as UMass defeated Siena Baseball 6-2 in the series-opener of a neutral site weekend series in Aberdeen, Maryland.
Powers scattered five hits and two runs while walking two and striking out seven to earn the win for UMass (4-0), which has opened its season with four straight wins over Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponents. The Minutemen swept Mount St. Mary's last weekend across state.
Siena (0-7) kept things within 3-1 through six, but UMass tallied three runs on three hits in the seventh, highlighted by a two-run single from Anthony Tirado to increase their advantage.
The Saints scored singular runs in the sixth and seventh innings on a double steal of home by
Vincent Venditti and an RBI double from
Scott Lynch.
Tyler Sausville went the first five on the mound for Siena, while
Ryan Taffe finished things off with a pair of scoreless frames.
The Saints will look to even the series Saturday at 1 p.m.
