LOUDONVILLE, NY — Siena Women's Basketball (13-16, 11-9 MAAC) closed out the regular season with a 67-57 victory over the Marist Red Foxes (11-19, 8-12 MAAC) at the UHY Center, overpowering the Red Foxes on the glass with a dominant 50-21 rebounding advantage.
Siena now turns its attention to the MAAC Championships, set to begin Thursday, March 5 at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The Saints built separation in the second quarter.
Alden Yergey opened the frame with a layup off a Hadley assist, and Melious followed with free throws and a fast-break jumper after a Yergey steal. After Marist trimmed the deficit with a three-pointer midway through the quarter, Yergey answered from beyond the arc.
Valencia Fontenelle-Posson added a pair of layups as Siena outscored the Red Foxes 15-12 in the period to take a 32-25 lead into halftime.
An 8-0 run to open the third quarter gave Siena firm control. Wedemeyer drilled a three-pointer to spark the surge, and Hadley added six points in the period, including a jumper that extended the lead to 43-27 with 5:15 remaining. Siena maintained its defensive intensity and rebounding edge to carry a 51-37 advantage into the final quarter.
Marist made a push in the fourth, but Siena responded with timely plays. Wedemeyer connected on another three-pointer midway through the period, and key layups from Pierce and Melious helped maintain the cushion.
Olivia Watkins sealed the victory at the free-throw line as the Saints secured the 67-57 win.
