Siena Softball dropped two games on Saturday at the CSU Kickoff, falling to Central Michigan, 7-3, and College of Charleston, 5-4, to move to 1-3 on the season.
Â
CMU 7, Siena 3
Gracie Goewey started in the circle and struck out seven over 4.2 innings, allowing five earned runs on seven hits.
Violet Marta worked the final two innings in relief, surrendering two runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out one and walking one across 46 pitches.
Â
Offensively,
Emma Petersen continued her power surge, going 2-for-4 with a home run—her third in as many games—and two RBI.
Chloe Cummings finished 2-for-4 with a double, while Goewey added a hit and a walk.
Â
Cummings opened the game with a double in the first, but Siena was unable to capitalize, and the teams remained scoreless through three innings. Petersen broke the deadlock in the fourth with a solo home run to center, giving Siena a 1-0 lead.
Â
Central Michigan responded with a five-run sixth inning, highlighted by a two-run home run from London Williams and an RBI double by Rachel Cairo, to take a 5-1 advantage. The Chippewas added two more runs in the seventh.
Â
Siena mounted a late rally in the bottom of the seventh. Singles by
Lauren Melton,
Carlie Venables, and Goewey loaded the bases, and a Central Michigan error allowed two runs to score. The comeback stalled there, however, as the Chippewas closed out the 7-3 victory.
Â
College of Charleston 5, Siena 4
Siena recorded 10 hits and played error-free defense but came up just short in a one-run loss. Goewey tossed 6.2 innings, allowing five earned runs on six hits while striking out five across 121 pitches.
Â
Cummings led the offense with a 3-for-4 day that included two doubles and two runs scored.
Gianna DiMeglio drove in two runs, while Petersen went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Â
Siena struck first in the opening inning when Cummings singled and later scored on DiMeglio's RBI hit to make it 1-0. The Saints extended their lead in the fourth, capitalizing on Charleston miscues to build a 4-0 advantage, with Cummings scoring again in the frame.
Â
Charleston began its comeback with two runs in the fourth and added single runs in the fifth and sixth to cut the deficit to 4-3. In the bottom of the seventh, Leela Langston delivered a walk-off RBI single to complete the comeback and give the Cougars a 5-4 win.
Siena concludes play at the CSU Kickoff on Sunday, Feb. 8, with a matchup against Charleston Southern at 10 a.m. at the CSU Softball Complex.
